The health and safety awareness training course has been designed to provide participants with a basic knowledge of health and safety procedures in the workplace and to assist employees in complying with current health and safety legislation.

It informs participants on how to work in a safe and appropriate manner and to maintain good health and safety practices. The course gives an overview of the responsibilities of the employer and the employee under the Safety Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 and the Safety Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007. The annual incidence of accidents and injuries in Irish workplaces are explored together with the role of the Health and Safety Authority in the promotion of safe working practices and the enforcement of health and safety legislation in the workplace.

Participants are given an overview of the safety statement which is one of the key health and safety requirements for any workplace. The contents of the safety statement are outlined and employees are made aware of the role and function of the safety statement in ensuring a safe working environment. The concept of hazard and risk are introduced when considering carrying out risk assessments and participants are taken through common workplace hazards. Hazards including manual handling, fire and emergency procedures, electricity, slip, trips and falls, noise, chemicals, work equipment and moving traffic are explained and everyday workplace scenarios are examined as a means of raising the level of awareness of participants when dealing with real-life situations.

This training course also identifies appropriate control measures for workplace hazards and the requirements for a safe working environment including the provision of an adequate number of fire wardens, first aiders, appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), good housekeeping, hygiene facilities and internal and external reporting of accidents. Completion of the course will provide employees with the knowledge, skills and competence to maintain good health and safety practices in the workplace.
