About Course

This course is designed to teach early intervention skill to support staff in the healthcare industry to deescalate and manage behaviour that may challenge. It is geared towards professional adult education and uses a participatory approach to learnings.

Initially the course will identify what aggression is, ascertain the staff experienced responses to aggression and then begin to build the on the knowledge, skills and techniques to enable staff members to confidentially deal with incidents of aggression.

The course emphasises a person centered approach, focusing on deescalating and communication skills to reduce the likelihood of incidents occurring and escalating. It aims to give learners the skills and confidence to respond and manage incidents of aggression in a confident manner.

Who is this training course intended for?

This course had been developed for any staff members working with the general public, who are experiencing increased levels of aggression and require education and training in the Recognising and Managing of Aggression in the Public sector, healthcare and community settings.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course participants will be able to:

  • Identify current Legislation and Policies on workplace aggression relevant to community and healthcare service in Ireland
  • Understand behaviours that challenge
  • Recognising trigger for behaviours and prepare for situation in which a behaviour might occur.
  • Become familiar with the stages of Behaviour Escalation
  • Develop an appreciation for the role the staff member can play in influencing the escalation or de-escalation of a behaviour
  • Learn de-escalation techniques and practice implementation to reduce or avoid further escalation
  • Prevention and risk management, behavioural supports and assessing risk
  • Understand the relevance and importance of debriefing after an incident and re-establishing professional relationships with clients following incidents of challenging behaviour
  • Practice Personal Safety Techniques (Breakaway)

Course Content

This course is designed to teach early intervention skill to support staff in the healthcare industry to deescalate and manage behaviour that may challenge. It is geared towards professional adult education and uses a participatory approach to learnings.

Learners will have an awareness of the legislation and procedures safeguarding staff against aggression in the workplace including Health Safety and Welfare at work, Incident Management Policy and Procedures and Lone worker policy.

Learners will developed an understanding for the cause of behaviours that challenge. They will be able to recognise the various stages of escalating behaviours and the role that we as professionals can play in escalating or de-escalating a situation.

Learners will role play how to communicate effectively with the person who is displaying the behaviours that challenge, using body language and to apply de-escalation techniques. They will be able to put into use the de-escalation tools practiced throughout the course and avoid potential triggers that may escalation the situation. The learners will practice positive communication skills and techniques to re-establish a professional rapport with the client following an incident.

The course will cover risk management relating to behaviours that may challenge, learners will identify possible risk situations in their workplace and discuss possible controls/interventions to reduce the risks.

Finally Learners will practice Personal Safety Breakaway Techniques designed to enable staff to safely disengage and to move to safety, where a crisis situation has escalated.

 

Course Delivery Method

This course is delivered as a one day classroom based training workshop. The course delivery will combine theory and practical skills sessions throughout the day. Emphasis will be placed on these practical skills sessions as well as scenario-based role-playing training.

Throughout the course students will take part in continual assessment exercises such as role plays and skills demonstration.
